Hoof Care

Formaldehyde

works actively against all viruses, fungi, yeasts and bacteria and is usually used in footbaths to prevent feet problems. Even though formaldehyde is most effective after the animal's feet have just been trimmed, it is advisable to wait a few days before using the formaldehyde bath after trimming feet. The advantage of formaldehyde is its effectiveness against bacteria but it is very painful for animals with open sores.Formaldehyde baths are very effective as a preventative measure. When it comes to problems such as strawberry or Interdigital Dermatitis formaldehyde will help more as a preventative than a curative measure.

Copper Sulphate

can also be used in a footbath and it will kill bacteria if it is in a 3-5% solution. Besides killing bacteria Copper will also help harden the hoof. Copper sulphate has great disinfecting abilities, but can lose its effectiveness once it comes in contact with organic matter such as manure.
