Cutting SilageGrass silage is the principal forage for the majority of beef cattle, dairy cows and pregnant ewes during the winter indoor feeding period. Accordingly silage quality has a major influence on animal performance. Poor quality silages will not support animal maintenance requirements whilst top quality silages (ie. 75% + DMD) will support over 20 litres of milk per cow daily, a daily live-weight gain pushing up for 1.0 kilo with finishing bullocks and a DLWG of close to 170 grams per finishing lamb. Producing high feed value silage supports high levels of animal performance. The feed value of grass silage is a combination of its intake potential and nutritive value, both of which are determined primarily by digestibility. Silages with low DMD have low intake characteristics.

If Conditions this Spring suit Reseeding – ‘GRASP THIS OPPORTUNITY’

reseedingGrass is the foundation of a profitable system for Irish Livestock Farmers. After 1st of April 2015, milk quotas will be gone and the focus will be to increase milk and meat production as efficiently as possible. At the recent Irish Grassland Dairy Conference, Dr. John Roche (New Zealand Dairy Consultant) gave an excellent presentation on the future profitability of Irish dairy farms post-quota. The take home message from the presentation was that grazed grass is Irelands’ competitive advantage as it distinguishes us from our competitors and it is the foundation of profitable systems.

Teagasc Profit Performance IndexTEAGASC - PASTURE PROFIT INDEX (PPI).

For the first time, the Department of Agriculture list of Recommended Grass Varieties includes the Teagasc Pasture Profit Index (PPI). This index ranks ryegrass varieties based on their potential to influence farm profitability.

• Each variety tested is assigned its PPI based on traits of economic importance for a grass based dairy farm & is applicable with good grassland management practices. • Those traits of importance are spring, summer & autumn growth, quality, silage yields & persistency. • Used in conjunction with the DAFM recommended list, the PPI is designed to assist grassland farmers in selecting those varieties most suitable for their particular enterprise.

grassland spring management

paddock damage after bad weather

LONGER days and warmer weather means horses will now be turned out for longer periods and owners will have to start managing their grazing areas. Unfortunately, bad weather over the winter months can leave paddocks patchy and rough, requiring some TLC to get them back in order for the grazing season ahead. Managing grassland for horses is not easy and requires perseverance and a certain amount of financial outlay.

Green Acres are the best performing mixtures on the market as can be testified by our many very happy customers over the years. In formulating our mixtures we take into account the on-going feedback which we receive from top grassland farmers and the latest grazing studies & research conducted by Teagasc Moorepark.

Quality is Guaranteed. Blended at our seed assembly plant in Drogheda, all our seeds are fully certified for germination and purity by the Department of Agriculture. The Green Acres name has always been synonymous with top quality seeds that have good vigor and persistently provide a top rate sward.
