Crop Rotation

Third and fourth year cereals are continuously proving disappointing and now is the time to put some serious thought into the rotation ahead. OSR once again performed very well this year, while both spring and winter beans look promising also. Both of these crops offer an excellent opportunity to break away from continuous cereals.

There has not been much of a window of opportunity to sow OSR this year, however, depending on location, crops can be established successfully right through the first 10 days of September. Target between 35/40 seeds per square metre and ensure to use the thousand grain weight when calibrating the drill. Clearfield varieties are an option in sites where volunteer/weed brassicas are an issue. Soil – seed contact is very important with rapeseed, so ensure a fine firm seedbed is achieved and roll if conditions allow.
